John J. Shumaker, CPA, brings a rich tapestry of financial acumen and a deep commitment to the arts as the Chief Financial Officer of The Center for Arts and Innovation. With a distinguished career spanning both non-profit and for-profit sectors, John is a forward-thinking visionary devoted to enhancing profitability, operational efficiencies, and fostering collaborative teams.  In his role, John specializes in strategic financial control, risk management, compliance, and auditing of annual financial statements, showcasing a profound understanding of the financial intricacies unique to the arts and culture sector. 

 

John’s impact extends beyond financial realms. As the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Finance at Miami City Ballet, he played a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s mission. His responsibilities included financial oversight, information technology integration, and facilities management. Known for his advocacy and fundraising efforts, John championed the Yes 2 Arts campaign in Miami Beach to secure $159 million of General Obligation bonds for capital improvements earmarked for the Arts and Culture community.  Having successfully lobbied government bodies and foundations, he has secured approximately $26 million in fundraising for various initiatives. Notably, during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, John applied his strategic approach, resulting in new revenue of $10.3 million through federal relief programs.

 

A mentor at heart, John is not only a financial leader but also a passionate advocate for cooperative and efficient teams. He actively promotes continuous learning and professional development, contributing to the overall success of the organizations he serves.

 

John’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Kentucky. He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation from both the Kentucky and Florida Boards of Accountancy in 2012 and 2022, respectively.  Engaged in professional associations, John is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Kentucky Society of CPAs (KYCPA), and the Florida Institute of CPAs (FICPA).
