“I Wonder… How Fashion is Made?” invites participants into the foundational craft behind every garment. Hosted in partnership with Fashion Institute of Florida, this in-depth, four-hour workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from an industry professional in an active fashion education environment.
Led by Rucht D’Oleo-Schwartz Fashion Designer, Author, and Director of the Fashion Institute of Florida, this immersive experience introduces participants to the essential language and techniques of pattern making.
Throughout the workshop, you will:
- Learn foundational pattern-making vocabulary and tools
- Understand core pattern drafting techniques
- Explore how patterns are properly placed and aligned on fabric
- Observe a live demonstration of how to take accurate body measurements
- Gain insight into how structure, proportion, and precision influence design
Participants will not only experience live instruction but will also receive extended learning resources, including access to the online version of the workshop for continued review and an e-copy of Pattern Making Made Simple. This ensures that the creative exploration continues long after the session concludes.
Pattern making is a powerful blend of artistry and engineering. It requires visualization, spatial reasoning, and attention to detail. It teaches patience and precision while encouraging imaginative thinking. In alignment with our mission, this workshop reinforces that creativity is not abstract, it is a disciplined skill set that can be learned, practiced, and refined.
By understanding how a flat piece of paper transforms into a three-dimensional garment, participants experience firsthand how ideas become tangible. That transformation builds confidence, not only in design, but in the ability to approach complex challenges step by step.
Why It Matters
At The Center for Arts & Innovation, we believe creativity is both practical and powerful. It strengthens critical thinking, precision, and imagination, the very skills that drive innovation across industries. The I Wonder…? Workshop Series was designed to give adults structured, immersive opportunities to explore creative disciplines in professional settings, reminding us that learning something new at any stage of life builds clarity, capability, and confidence. Fashion pattern making is where vision becomes structure.
