“I Wonder… What It Would Be Like to Write Poetry?” invites you to explore the powerful intersection of visual art and written word. Hosted in collaboration with Miami Poetry Club at YoungArts, this immersive evening workshop introduces participants to the art of ekphrastic poetry, a form of writing inspired by visual artwork. Through close observation, guided prompts, and reflective conversation, participants will engage with visual pieces in a thoughtful and intentional way. You’ll be invited to slow down, notice details, and explore your personal response, whether that response connects to memory, emotion, imagination, or narrative.
Ekphrastic poetry offers a uniquely accessible entry point into creative writing:
- No prior writing experience is required
- Prompts provide structure and guidance
- There is no pressure to perform or “get it right”
- Reflection and interpretation are valued over technical perfection
Throughout the session, facilitators from Miami Poetry Club will guide participants through observation exercises, creative prompts, and optional sharing. The emphasis is on exploration and dialogue, creating space for thoughtful conversation across experience levels.
This experience reflects our broader belief that creativity deepens awareness. When we pause to look closely at a work of art and translate what we see into language, we strengthen our ability to notice nuance, articulate perspective, and listen to others. These are the same skills that foster leadership, collaboration, and cultural understanding.
The evening concludes with a supportive opportunity for participants to share excerpts of their writing, if they choose, reinforcing the confidence that comes from giving voice to one’s own interpretation.
Why It Matters
At The Center, we believe creativity is not an extracurricular activity, it is a vital human capacity. It shapes how we interpret the world, how we process experience, and how we communicate meaning. Yet many adults quietly abandon creative expression, convinced they are “not writers” or “not artistic.” The I Wonder…? Workshop Series was created to gently challenge that belief. This series is designed to reopen the door to exploration, to create structured, welcoming spaces where adults can experiment, reflect, and rediscover their creative voice. By stepping into unfamiliar artistic experiences, participants strengthen observation, empathy, critical thinking, and self-expression, skills that enrich both personal and professional life.
