“I Wonder…What It Would Be Like to Capture A Moment Through Photography?” invites participants into the art of portrait photography, an experience that blends technical learning with human connection. Hosted in partnership with Miami Institute of Photography at El Autobús, this hands-on workshop introduces the foundational elements of portraiture while creating space for experimentation and play.
Throughout the evening, participants will explore:
- The basics of lighting, composition, and framing
- How to direct and pose a subject with confidence
- The emotional and storytelling power of portrait photography
- How subtle shifts in angle, expression, and perspective change an image
This workshop is uniquely interactive: participants will both photograph and be photographed. By stepping into both roles, artist and subject, you gain a deeper understanding of vulnerability, presence, and connection. The result is not just a stronger photograph, but a stronger awareness of how we present ourselves and how we honor others through the lens.
No prior experience is required. While bringing a camera is encouraged, smartphones are absolutely welcome. The emphasis is on learning to see, not on having the most advanced equipment.
In alignment with our mission, this experience goes beyond technical skill. Photography teaches us to slow down, observe carefully, and find beauty in nuance. It builds confidence in directing, communicating, and collaborating. It reminds us that perspective matters, and that we each have the power to shape it.
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a beautiful portrait of themselves and a deeper understanding of how images tell stories. More importantly, they will leave with renewed creative courage, the confidence that comes from trying something new and discovering capability along the way.
Why It Matters
At The Center, we believe creativity is a skill that strengthens how we see, and how we are seen. When adults give themselves permission to explore something new, they expand not only their artistic abilities, but their empathy, perception, and presence. The I Wonder…? Workshop Series was created to provide structured opportunities for that exploration, immersive experiences where curiosity leads and self-trust follows.
Photography is one of the most powerful ways to practice seeing differently.
